Generation of in-vivo and in-vitro databases

Results of previous studies will be compiled into comprehensive databases of in-vivo and in-vitro acute toxicity data.

The in-vivo data (from both animal tests and human poisoning accidents) will encompass 100-140 chemicals and will primarily be used in evaluating and calibrating in-vitro data and the in-vitro test strategy. However, the animal tests currently used to assess acute toxicity for regulatory purposes have not been properly validated. Retrospective biometrical studies will therefore be carried out within the ACuteTox project to evaluate the quality and predictive capabilities of the in-vivo data and will thus provide a reference as to how accurate the in-vitro test strategy has to be to achieve regulatory approval. The in-vitro database will be compiled from the results of two ongoing research projects (wherein ACuteTox partners participate) and will be extended with the results of a large number of additional tests carried out within the present project.
