Selection and refinement of in-vitro tests

A wide range of in-vitro test types will be evaluated and the most promising and accurate ones will be further refined.

Particular attention will be paid to cases where the in-vitro/in-vivo correlation is unsatisfactory. To this end, further parameters, such as ADE (administration, distribution and elimination), metabolism and organ specificity (nervous system, kidney and liver), will be included. These will be characterised through in-vitro testing and kinetic modelling to attempt to improve the in-vitro/in-vivo correlation. The results are expected to yield “alert” tests to indicate when a test result may not be valid and “corrector” tests to improve the predictive capabilities of a test. A capacity to indicate when an in-vitro approach may be insufficient and that additional testing is required or that a certain compound is beyond its predictive capabilities represents an important step forward for in-vitro methods.
